I’m honored to join Kathleen Speranza as guest artist for a five-day alla prima landscape painting workshop at Rush Hollow Studio, Vermont, from September 8–12, 2025.
Organized and hosted by Kathy and her husband Parker Heath, this immersive program is tailored for painters with some experience who want to deepen their perceptual practice in a supportive, inspiring environment.
We’ll paint directly from observation, focusing on premier coup—a quick, intuitive approach that bridges realism and abstraction.
Workshop Techniques Include:
Wet-in-wet paint application
Thick-on-thin layering
Quick composition decisions
Direct color notes
There will also be time in the studio to explore questions like: What makes a painting work? and How does a painter’s perception shape form?
As guest artist, I’ll share insights and techniques from over two decades of teaching and painting. My perceptual approach is inspired by Charles Hawthorne and Edwin Dickinson, centering on direct experience, atmosphere, and form.
The workshop takes place at Rush Hollow Studio, a renovated 1850s barn in southwestern Vermont, surrounded by creek beds, gardens, woods, and farmland—perfect for immersive landscape painting.
All materials are provided, and enrollment includes daily lunch and a farewell dinner hosted by Parker (aka the guy behind the camera).
Class size is limited to 10 students.Early-bird pricing has ended, but general registration is still open.

My heartfelt thanks to Kathy and Parker for their kindness, dedication, and for inviting me to be a part of this creative journey.
